Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation's Responsible Gambling Awareness Week 2009 October 4 - 10

October 4 to 10, 2009 marked the eighth annual Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) launched RGAW in 2002, with the goals of increasing public awareness about the risks of gambling and providing players with the information they need to make informed decisions that foster responsible gambling behaviour.

Each year, the events of RGAW are targeted at specific communities across the Province. In 2009, the target communities were:

  • Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Cape Breton Regional Municipality
  • Antigonish
  • Amherst
  • New Minas
  • Yarmouth

Several events were incorporated into the Week, including the following:

  • Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation's Responsible Gambling Conference was held on October 5 and 6. The goal of the Conference was to inspire, stimulate and educate through innovative presentation formats and rich discussion. 250 people attended this two-day event.
  • Interactive Community Education Displays were set up in each of the target communities, and the display visited two locations in the Halifax Regional Municipality. These displays provided the public with an opportunity to learn important information about what responsible gambling behaviour looks like. Close to 200 people visited the display.
  • Both Casino Nova Scotia locations, in Halifax and in Sydney, received responsible gambling materials as part of the Player Information Program. This included coasters, posters, tent cards, and signage.
  • Retail locations with video lottery terminals within the target communities received tent cards and coasters as part of the Player Information Program.
  • An open house took place at the Responsible Gambling Resource Centres in both Casino Nova Scotia locations, Halifax and Sydney, providing casino patrons the opportunity to learn more about responsible gambling and the services of the Centres.
  • Responsible gambling information was sent to 25,000 homes in the target communities.
